Gloria Jean Short, 54, of Upatoi, GA died Monday, January 4, 2016 at her home.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, January 11, 2016 at Cascade Hills Church 727 54th St. Columbus, GA 31904 with Pastor Reggie Williams officiating. Interment will follow at Green Acres Cemetery. The family will receive friends and loved ones on Sunday afternoon from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Gloria was born January 31, 1961 in Columbus, GA. She is the daughter of the late Aaron and Annie Lee (Collier) Averett. She retired 30 years after serving Civil Service as an Administrative Assistant in the Quality Management Division at Ft. Benning, GA. She was a former member of South Columbus United Methodist Church and Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church. Gloria was very active in her community. She participated in Relay for Life and other breast cancer walks. She was also a board member of The Soul of My Footprints, and other community activities. She loved her family and friends and was very involved in many neighborhood events. Gloria loved taking family vacations and traveling with her husband Robert Short.
She is preceded in death by her mother Annie Lee Averett and father Aaron Averett, sisters Diane Gates, Lavonne Stathums, Brenda Averett, brothers Woodrow Averett and most recently Robert Harold Averett, her son, Caleb Short and her granddaughter, Gianna "GiGi" Lindsey.
She is survived by her loving husband, Robert Short of Upatoi, GA, daughters, Shameika Averett of Ft. Mitchell, AL and Lindsey (Joseph) Roberson of Albany, GA, son, Kevin Jones of Columbus, GA, step-daughters, Robyn Short Bush of Dallas, TX and Nichole Scott of Las Vegas, NV, step-son, Robert Short, Jr. of Panama City, FL, sister, Annette Averette of New York, NY, brother, Willie (Barbara)Averett of Union City, GA, loving nieces Denicia (Carl) Sumbry and Liza Averette and four grandchildren, Maya Roberson, Joseph Roberson, Jr., Chanel and Pamela Bush and a host of other family and friends.
