William "Jim" Wetherington, Sr., a cherished family man, esteemed community leader, and dedicated public servant, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2025, in Columbus, Georgia.

A Celebration of Jim’s Life will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, January 09, 2025 in the Sanctuary of First Baptist Church with Dr. James C. “Jimmy” Elder, Jr. officiating. A private interment will be held in Parkhill Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jim’s grandsons with Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Columbus Police Department. The family invites friends to join them one hour prior to the funeral for visitation in the fellowship hall of First Baptist Church.

Born on November 28, 1937, in Houston County, Alabama, Jim’s journey in life was marked by devotion to his loved ones, an unwavering commitment to justice, and a profound faith that guided his every step.

Jim leaves behind a legacy of love and service, exemplified by his 67-year marriage to his beloved wife, Shirley Bell Wetherington. Together, they raised a family with strong values and a sense of community. His children, Kathy Carden, Jim Wetherington, Jr., (Debbie), Sherry Lowery (Dan), remember him as a guiding light and a pillar of strength. He is also survived by his brother, Fred Wetherington (Vicki), of Daphne, Al.

The pride Jim felt for his grandchildren was immeasurable. Tiffany Gallops (Hudson), Ashley Wetherington, Jimbo Wetherington (Jessica), John Carden (Jenna), Dan Lowery (Jenna), Matt Lowery (Lauren), Drew Wetherington (Carly), and Will Lowery (Lindsay) brought immense joy to his life. His 14 great-grandchildren, who will grow up hearing tales of their great-grandfather's kindness and wisdom, are a testament to the love he so freely gave.

A proud alumnus of Campbellton High School, Jim’s passion for learning led him to attain a Bachelor of Science from Columbus State University and a Master of Education from Georgia State University. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a career marked by exemplary leadership.

Jim's professional life was as notable as it was impactful. As the former Chief of Police in Columbus, Georgia, he dedicated himself to the safety and well-being of his community. His commitment to justice and rehabilitation was further evidenced by his roles as the Vice Chairman of the State of Georgia Pardon and Paroles Board and as the Commissioner of Corrections for the State of Georgia. Later, he shaped young minds and hearts as the Headmaster at Calvary Christian School. His tenure as the Mayor of Columbus, Georgia, was characterized by integrity and an unwavering dedication to public service.

Beyond his remarkable career, Jim was a man of deep faith. As a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Columbus, Ga., he lived his beliefs through action and service. His example of kindness and generosity will continue to inspire those who knew him.

Jim's interests were a reflection of his love for people. He cherished spending time with his family and grandchildren, recognizing each moment as a precious gift. His warmth and presence will be greatly missed at family gatherings, where he was always the heart of conversation and laughter.

As we bid farewell to William "Jim" Wetherington, Sr., we celebrate a life well-lived—a life of purpose, compassion, and unwavering dedication to others. He has left an indelible mark on the hearts of his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched. His memory will be carried forward in the stories shared, the lessons he taught, and the love he spread so abundantly.
