Billy Massey, a loving, devoted husband, father, and grandfather, age 65, of Columbus, Georgia, passed away Thursday, August 13, 2020 at Emory University Hospital.
Billy was born October 7, 1954, at Fort Benning, Georgia, to the late William Raymond Massey and Ruth (Talley) Massey. He was married to his faithful and caring soulmate, Sonya (Plowden), in 1979 and they enjoyed 41 years of marriage together. He graduated from Columbus College and worked as a loyal employee of Union Carbide/Kemet for 14 years and Aflac for 28 years. Over the years he enjoyed volunteering with the Edgewood Baptist Upward Basketball Program, EBC's Media/Camera ministry, Civil Air Patrol, and Young Eagles. Anyone that knew him knew the things he loved: Jesus, his family, his country, flying, photography, golf, and the Atlanta Braves.
Billy is survived by his wife Sonya; two daughters Alex Merritt (Kevin) and Catherine White (Mark); grandchildren Ezra, Willow, and Rowen Merritt; sister Brenda Zahn (Ron); nephews and niece David Zahn, Matthew Zahn, Lee Plowden, and Jennifer Pekor.
Billy was preceded in death by his nephew Christopher Pekor and his grandson Oakland Merritt.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:30 pm, Monday, August 17, 2020, at Edgewood Baptist Church, 3564 Forest Road, Columbus, GA, with Reverend Andy Merritt officiating. A private interment will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 2:30 pm, the hour immediately preceding the service, at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Never Alone Project, neveralonepandemic.org, or to Edgewood Baptist Church. Billy would also encourage everyone to consider being organ and blood donors.
