A valiant warrior, Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) William ‘Bill' Sidney ‘Godwin, died on Saturday, December 5, 2015 Columbus, GA, surrounded by his loving family.

Bill was born to the late Elmer and Goldie Godwin in Hot Springs, Arkansas in 1950. He graduated from the University of Arkansas, earned his Master's at the University of Texas and was a Microsoft Certified Engineer. After a distinguished and decorated military career in the United States Army, serving throughout the U.S. and Europe, Bill retired in 1993 and continued serving his country for two decades as a defense contractor. He furthered his legacy of service as an adjunct instructor at Columbus Technical College, where he was treasured by students and colleagues.

Bill was a dedicated and faithful member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry, was an acolyte master and an usher. Bill's willingness to help set up - and take down - any activity at church, endeared him to everyone at St. Thomas. He also served as a Boy Scout leader, Little League coach, President of the Springlake Homeowner's Association and was an active member of the Retired Officer's Association.

Bill had a kind, softhearted and patient demeanor. He was a ‘gentle giant', showing care for many in his quiet way. He loved corny jokes, a lively golf game and family beach trips with a good book. He had a dry wit that often had you laughing days after you got the joke. Bill adored his loving wife Cindy and was rarely seen not holding her hand. He would proudly recite every honor, accomplishment, award and memorable moment of his children's lives.

Bill's most treasured role in life was as husband and father. He is survived by his beloved wife Cindy Pearcy Godwin, with whom he celebrated 45 years of marriage; his adoring children, son Wm. Stewart Godwin, daughter-in-law Anita Godwin, granddaughter and namesake, Sydney Godwin - all of Adan, Kuwait, daughter Margaret ‘Meg' Pelletier and son-in-law, Dr. Mark Pelletier of Christiansburg, VA. He is also survived by his sister, Margaret Haley Phillips, and a niece and nephew.

Funeral services for Bill Godwin will be held at 11:00am, on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church with full military honors, the Reverend Grace Burton Edwards, officiating. The family will greet friends after the service at a reception at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, the Wounded Warrior project or the John B. Amos Cancer Center.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Andy Pippas and the superb staff at Midtown Medical Center 6 East and ICU 8.
