Walter Gilbert Thornton, 71, of Columbus, GA. went to be with his Lord on Friday November 14, 2014.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM, Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at Britt David Baptist Church with Dr. Tim Jones officiating. Interment to follow in Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5:00-7:00 PM at McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA 31907.
Gilbert was born on October 31, 1943 in Columbus, GA. to the late Albert Thurman Thornton, Sr. and Margaret Gertrude Cooksey Thornton. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was retired from Sears as the Operations Manager. Mr. Thornton was an active member of Britt David Baptist Church and for many years he has been a Christian mentor and model to many children in the community. He had a great love for the outdoors and was a true sports fan.
Other than his parents, Mr. Thornton was preceded in death by his sister, Beverly Thornton Overdiek and his brother-in-law, John Fell, Sr.
Survivors include his wife of 32 years Penny Lynn Flowers Thornton; son, Stanley Gilbert Thornton (Charlotte); daughter, Kimberly Thornton Martin (Tim); two brothers, Albert Thornton, Jr. (Shelby) and Mike Thornton (Marie); two sisters, Mary Fell and Imogene Thornton; two grandchildren, Clara Margaret Martin and Elizabeth "Ellie" Ann Martin, many nieces and nephews, extended family and his constant canine companion, Buster.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Britt David Baptist Church or John B. Amos Cancer Center.
