Mr. Wallace Andrew (Andy) Huey, 75, went to meet his Lord on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at his home in Columbus, Georgia. Born in Bessemer, Alabama on April 28, 1940, the son of Ellis and Bessie Lewis Huey, Wallace lived a life dedicated to music, public education and a love for his Christian faith.
Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, November 28, 2015 at Bethesda Baptist Church, 3830 GA-85, Ellerslie, Georgia 31807 with Rev. David Helms and Rev. Mark Chandler officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the church. A private interment will be held in Parkhill Cemetery according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, Ga.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Lynn Lollar Huey; his daughter, Donna Lynn Huey Hansen, and her husband, Jon; his son, Drew Huey and his wife, Susan; his daughter Beth Huey Granberry, and her husband, Lamar; his daughter Bebe Huey Dodd, and her husband Robert; grandchildren Rachael Huey Mercado and her husband Allan; Jon Paul Hansen; Justin Hansen; Christopher Huey; Nicholas Hansen and his wife Leah; Rebekah Huey; Breanne Granberry; Jacob Hansen; and great grandchildren Cadence, Kinsley, and Maddox.
Mr. Huey served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1960 to 1963. He then received his Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from Auburn University, his Masters of Music Education from Mississippi State University. He also completed Six Year Certificates in Administration & Supervision at the University of Alabama, Birmingham; and in Music Educations at Auburn University.
He was the Choral Director for Auburn University NROTC Choir, Jordan High School, and E.B. Erwin High School, Birmingham, AL; he served as Principal of Pinson Valley High School and Assistant Principal of Pinson Valley Junior High School, Pinson, AL, and as Principal of Bibb City Elementary School and South Columbus Elementary School in Columbus, GA. Wallace made many lifelong friendships with colleagues and students alike.
Wallace served a number of congregations during his lifetime as Minister of Music and Youth, including: Summerville Baptist Church (AL), First Baptist Church of Eclectic (AL), Farmville Baptist Church (AL), Wynnton Baptist Church (Columbus, GA), Northside Baptist Church (Columbus, GA), Mt. Zion Baptist Church (Columbus, GA), First Baptist Church Mathiston (MS), North Phenix Baptist Church (AL), Westmont Baptist Church (Birmingham, AL), First Baptist Church (Trussville, AL), First Baptist Indian Springs (Indian Springs, AL), Rose Hill Baptist Church (Columbus, GA), Wynnbrook Baptist Church (Columbus, GA), and Philadelphia Baptist Church (Smiths, AL). Mr. Huey faithfully sought to share his love for Jesus with others through music.
Wallace was an accomplished performer as a tenor soloist and director with Auburn University; soloist at Temple Israel; the Columbus Choral Guild; Columbus Civic Chorale; Columbus Chamber Group; Trinity Episcopal Church; First Presbyterian Church; St. Luke United Methodist Church, and Georgia Public Television. Additionally, he was active in Georgia Music Educators Association, serving as organizing chairman for the first Georgia Junior High All-State Chorus; organizing chairman for the first Junior High Girls Chorus; District III Choral Chairman; District III Festival Chairman, and he was instrumental in establishing the Columbus Civic Chorale.
In his retirement, Mr. Huey enjoyed training and raising Epagneul Breton working bird dogs. He was an active member of Club de L'Epagneul Breton of the United States, Inc. and served as past president of the national organization. Wallace very much enjoyed traveling and meeting others who shared his interest in French Brittany's. He will be missed by his beloved canine companions Tessie, Dakota, Alexander, Artie and Sassy.
