Vonnie L. Wood Tate, 96, of Columbus, GA, died Saturday, December 23, 2017 at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, December 28, 2017 at the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907 with Rev. Paul Thomas officiating. Interment will be held at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:00-2:00 PM at the funeral home.
Mrs. Tate was born October 16, 1921 in Bonifay, FL, daughter of the late James Irving Wood and Ila Josephine Carswell Wood. She was the daughter of a sharecropper and was a hard worker her entire life. Mrs. Tate retired from Bibb Manufacturing Company as a Weaver. She was a loving mother and grandmother and was a strong, independent woman with a soft voice. Mrs. Tate birthed 11 children, raised 10 and looked after many grandchildren. She was 96 and passed away on the same day as her youngest daughter, Cheryl Tate Studstill of whom she was very close to. She will always be in our hearts, but are glad after these last few days she is at peace.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Zander Tate, sons, James Tate and Jerry Tate and daughters, Cheryl Studstill and Carol Tate.
Survivors include her children, Grace Rhodes of Columbus, GA, Gerldene Ellington of Tallahassee, FL, Billy Tate (Betty) of Phenix City, AL, Kenneth Tate of Columbus, GA, Sonja Kellum (Ernest) of Gordon, GA, Michael Tate (Louise) of Box Springs, GA and Johnny Tate of Virginia; brother, R.T. Wood of Columbus, GA and 86 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
