Virginia Dare Dobson Jackson, 106, of Columbus, GA died Saturday, February 10, 2018 at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home.

A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held 4:00 PM on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at St. Luke United Methodist Church with Rev. C. Dick Reese and Rev. Cindy Cox Garrard officiating. The family will greet visitors after the service.

Mrs. Jackson was born April 2, 1911 to Eva Bell and Linwood Gaither Dobson in Lancaster, South Carolina where she grew up one of 11 children. After graduation she moved to Charlotte, North Carolina where she began her career in banking and finance. She was the first woman teller in the Southeast working at First Union National Bank in Charlotte. It was there where she met and later married Walter Heygood Jackson on April 23, 1938. The Jacksons moved to Columbus, Georgia, began their family, and made Columbus their permanent home. Virginia and Walter Jackson were devoted members of St. Luke United Methodist Church, where they were involved in numerous activities. They were among the couples who helped begin the Shaw Sunday School Class. She served as everything from Sunday School Superintendent to the planner and cook for all summer camp programs. Mrs. Jackson later became the financial secretary for the church. She was also a very proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mr. and Mrs. Jackson were delighted when their son and only child, James Linwood Jackson, Sr. attended and graduated from his father's alma mater, Georgia Institute of Technology.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Jackson was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters.

She is survived by her son, James Linwood Jackson, Sr. and his wife Margaret, of Forsyth, Ga; a granddaughter, Jenna L. Jackson of Brunswick, Ga, a granddaughter, Margaret J. "Meg" Beaird and her husband Benjamin from Dallas, Tx, and a grandson, James L. Jackson, Jr. of Macon, Ga. She is survived by four great-grandchildren: Parker Pittman, Bailey B. Beaird, Jackson T. Beaird, and Dobson S. Beaird. Additionally, she is survived by one sister, Mildred D. Mader of Maryland.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Mrs. Jackson's honor to St. Luke United Methodist Church, 1103 2nd Ave., Columbus, Ga, 31907, Open Door Community House, 2405 Second Ave., Columbus, Ga 31901, or the charity of the donor's choice.
