Melvin Troy Roberts, known to most as Troy, went home to be with the Lord on February 8, 2025, at the age of 82 in Columbus, Georgia. Born in Lubbock, Texas, on November 12, 1942, Troy lived a life marked by unwavering faith, devoted service, and steadfast love for God, family, country, and community.

A Life of Faithful Service

Troy’s greatest passion was serving the Lord. A longtime member of Evangel Church, he was deeply committed to Christ, serving as a deacon for decades and faithfully teaching God’s Word in Sunday School classes for over half a century.  He poured into generations of young people, driving the bus and mentoring during youth choir trips, Royal Ranger Pow Wows, and so much more. He gave of himself so others had opportunities to grow in their faith and he provided a beautiful example of a godly man.

Before settling in Georgia, Troy faithfully ministered wherever God placed him, serving as a youth leader and choir director in Lubbock, Texas, as well as leading soldiers in Heidelberg, Germany. His faith wasn’t just something he spoke about; it was the foundation of his life. Whether mentoring a young believer, teaching a Sunday School class, or quietly helping someone in need, Troy reflected the love and grace of Christ.

Proud Service to His Country

Troy was a true patriot who answered the call to serve his country as an Army aviator. He flew reconnaissance missions in the O-1 Bird Dog over Vietnam, then served in the Georgia Army National Guard for the next 24 years, flying the OV-1 Mohawk before being selected to be an instructor pilot in the 158th Military Intelligence Battalion, and Company A 151st Military Intelligence Battalion. The U-21 Ute was the last military aircraft he flew and just before he retired Troy was one of the operations officers for the 1996 Olympic Games handling over 3000 aircraft operations without incident.

His commitment to service extended beyond his time in uniform. He carried the discipline, leadership, and integrity of a soldier throughout his life, always striving to make a difference in the lives of others.

Dedicated to His Community and Work

Troy believed in hard work and dedication, principles that guided both his professional and personal life. He was a graduate of Texas Tech and after his military service, he worked as an insurance agent for Metropolitan Life before becoming a financial advisor for Lincoln National, where he earned multiple awards for his service. His career wasn’t just about numbers, though, it was about helping families plan for their futures and supporting them in times of need.

Beyond his career, Troy was a man of many skills. A natural craftsman, he spent countless hours in his vast, if messy, workshop, which holds more tools than most hardware stores. Whether fixing cars, building onto his home, or lending a hand to a neighbor, he used his talents to bless others.

Devoted Husband, Father, and Grandfather

Second only to his love for the Lord was Troy’s love for his family. He was the adoring husband of Jane Groman Roberts, whom he cherished wholeheartedly and with whom he built a life full of faith, laughter, and deep love. Together, they raised two children: Jennifer Roberts Evangelista (Brad) and Jefferson Troy Roberts (Beth).

He was a proud grandfather to Joseph Troy Evangelista, Jacob Michael Evangelista (Miranda), Arabella Faith Evangelista, Abraham Brad Evangelista, and Bryson Troy Roberts, as well as a great-grandfather to Roman Michael Evangelista and Magdalene Louisa Evangelista.

Troy was survived by his brother Doyle Roberts and too many nieces, nephews, and in-laws to count. His love, wisdom, and unwavering presence will remain with them throughout their lives.

A Life Well-Lived

Troy Roberts was a man of deep faith, strong convictions, and a servant’s heart. He lived with purpose, leading by example in every area of his life. His legacy of love, service, and faith will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A celebration of his life will be held at Evangel Church on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at 2 p.m., with visitation immediately following at the church. Flowers would be appropriate or, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Evangel MAPS Local or Georgia Hospice Care in his memory. Special thanks to Tony Miller, RN and Liz Chapman, CNA for the way they used their skills to bless Troy and minister to his family.

"Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your master.” Matthew 25:23
