Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Thomas "Tom" Haslett Whitley, 68, of Hamilton, GA died Monday, February 24, 2014 at Columbus Hospice House.
Funeral services with full military honors will be held 5:00 PM Thursday, February 27, 2014 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. The family will receive friends following the service.
LTC Whitley was born on January 2, 1946 in Washington D.C. , son of Lieutenant Colonel (Retired)Edgar Deur Whitley, USAF, of Los Angeles, CA and the late Yvonne Wightman Whitley. He was a United States Army Infantry officer for 23 years. After his retirement from the Army he taught Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets at Hardaway High School for 17 years.
Survivors other than his father include his wife of 42 years, Kimberly "Kim" Bailey Whitley of Hamilton, GA; a daughter, Lindsay Bradley (Lonny) and grandchildren, Dain and Brynna Bradley of Columbus, GA; sons; Thomas "Tom" Whitley, Jr. of Atlanta, GA; Brian Whitley of Columbus, GA; and Scott Whitley of Columbus, GA; a sister, Ann Whitley of Auburn, CA; brothers Doug Whitley (Christina) of Rancho Cucamonga, CA and David Whitley (Tammy) of Tehachapi, CA.
LTC Whitley attended Balboa High School, Panama Canal Zone; was commissioned as a second lieutenant of Infantry through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program upon graduation from the University of Arizona at Tucson; and later earned a Master's of Education degree from Georgia State University. During his 23 years' service, LTC Whitley served as an Infantry combat leader with the 23rd Infantry Division (Americal) in the Republic of Vietnam awarded with two Purple Hearts and a Silver Star; served in South Korea in the DMZ; with United States Army Europe in Wildflecken, Federal Republic of Germany; and with the 1st Armored Division in Illesheim, Germany; and in Saudi Arabia during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in the Gulf War. His final assignments prior to retirement were on the staff of the United States Army Infantry School and with the Army Marksmanship Unit at Fort Benning, Ga.
