Thomas Ronald “Ronnie” Sanders, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away on September 21, 2024, in his home surrounded by his loving family in his beloved hometown of Columbus, GA.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Friday, September 27, 2024 in the chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. Interment will be held at Parkhill Cemetery following the service.
Ronnie was born on November 30, 1936, to parents George Pierpoint and Clara Etheridge Sanders, Ronnie's 87 years of life was characterized by his loving nature, his courage in the face of adversity, and his selfless approach to life.
Ronnie's life was a testament to his enduring love for his family. He leaves behind his loving wife of 60 years, Phyllis Pitts Sanders, and their four children: Traci Sanders of Columbus, GA, Kristi Gayles (Wayne) of Midland, GA, Jennifer Sanders of Columbus, GA, and Thomas Ronald "Ronnie" II (Ann Marie) of Columbus, GA. His legacy continues through his six grandchildren: Raegan Gayles of Atlanta, GA, Calvin Gayles (Allie) of Columbus, GA, Kamryn Commander of Columbus, GA, Trey Sanders of Columbus, GA, Molly Gayles of Midland, GA, and Lily Sanders of Columbus, GA. Ronnie was a cherished brother to his sister Annette Sanders Pollock of Columbus, GA, and brother-in-law Wallace Pitts of Columbus, GA. He was preceded in death by his brothers Jack Hines, Carl Sanders, Lloyd Sanders, and Leon Sanders. His memory will also be treasured by numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of faithful friends.
A proud graduate of Jordan High School's class of 1955, Ronnie furthered his education at Columbus College, where he pursued a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree. His professional journey was as diverse as it was distinguished. Ronnie honorably served his country as a US Army Veteran in Signal Intelligence. Returning to his roots in Columbus, he began his civilian career as a firefighter with the Columbus, GA Fire Department. His dedication to public service continued when he joined the United States Postal Service in 1966, first as a Letter Carrier, then as a Route Supervisor, and ultimately retiring as the Postmaster of the Cataula, GA Post Office after 30 years of commendable service.
Ronnie's interests and hobbies were as rich and varied as his professional life. An avid cook, he found joy in preparing meals for family and friends. His love for the outdoors was evident in his passion for fishing and playing senior league softball, a sport he continued to enjoy until the age of 80. Each morning, he looked forward to the challenge of a new crossword puzzle, a testament to his love for words and lifelong learning. A true fan at heart, Ronnie's support for the Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Braves was unwavering, and his enthusiasm for his teams was infectious among those who knew him.Ronnie's wit was as sharp as his sense of humor, and his ability to tell a joke, with a twinkle in his eye, remained with him until the very end.
Described as loving, courageous, and selfless, Ronnie's character was the epitome of strength and kindness. He faced his final battle with cancer with the same courage and dignity that characterized his entire life. His five-month fight against the disease showcased his resilience and the depth of his spirit.
Thomas Ronald Sanders's journey through life was one of purpose and passion, leaving a lasting impression on his family, friends, and community. As we say goodbye to Ronnie, we celebrate the remarkable life he lived and the countless memories he has given to each of us. His was a life well-lived, full of moments that will be treasured by those who were fortunate enough to share them with him.
