Thomas Hillis Jenkins, 92, of Columbus, GA died peacefully Friday, March 11, 2016 at Gentiva Hospice. He had enjoyed a long and healthy retirement. His past four years were happily spent at Covenant Woods Retirement Community.
Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Monday, March 14, 2016 at the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907 with Rev. Chip Grantham officiating. A private entombment will be in the Chapel of Pines Mausoleum, Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday afternoon from 3:00 to 4:00 PM at the funeral home.
Mr. Jenkins was born September 26, 1923 in Sardis, GA son of the late Thomas H. Jenkins, Sr. and Nancy Reddick Jenkins. He was an U.S. Marine Corp Veteran and served as a Sergeant in World War II. He was a member of the 1st Marine division to land on Guadalcanal. After receiving a Purple Heart medal, he became an instructor for the Marine Corp.
His profession and love was education. He was an Educator for the Muscogee County school system since 1949. He opened and was the first principal of Morningside Elementary in Jan. 1952 and retired as the Principal of Clubview Elementary in 1984. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Caudelle Jenkins and his sister, Mary Jenkins Howard.
Survivors include his daughter, Harriet Denny (Jim) of Woodstock, GA, son, Brantley Thomas Jenkins (Fran) of Columbus, GA, four grandchildren, Bradley Denny (Tiffany), Bartley Denny, Claire Denny and Kathryn Jenkins, and one great grandchild, Olivia Belle Denny.
Flowers will be accepted but those so desiring may make memorial contributions to Upatoi Methodist Church 13730 Macon Rd. Upatoi, GA 31829 or to the Valley Rescue Mission 2903 2nd Ave. Columbus, GA 31904.
