Mr. Thomas Grant Whitley, 59, of Cataula, Georgia passed away from congestive heart failure on March 2, 2021, during a recent stay at Columbus Hospice. He was born on April 12, 1961, in Columbus, Georgia and had lived in the Cataula, Georgia area since the age of four. He had been a commercial truck driver for over thirty years and took great pride in his semi rig and his exceptional driving record. He had been an independent trucking contractor with K.L. Breeden & Sons Trucking out of Irving, Texas for almost twenty years. He was always the driver the company could depend on to haul not only his own dedicated loads, but any additional or emergency loads that could not be covered. He logged over 3 million accident- free miles during his illustrious career.
He will always be fondly and lovingly remembered as a jokester at home and at work, where he was better and affectionally known as “Cornfed” or simply “Fed” by all of his coworkers. He enjoyed a good laugh, barbecuing at his home, and spending time with his friends and family. His door was always open when a friend or a place to stay was needed. He was the first one friends and co-workers would call when they needed advice or repairson their trucks. He was looking forward to winding down his many years on the road and remodeling his home in Cataula, Georgia. He loved being outdoors and free.
When he was a youngster, he was known as an enthusiastic and outstanding pitcher with the Little and Pioneer Leagues in Columbus, Georgia. He had a pitch that no one could hit and was feared by the hitters at home plate. He was a formidable player on the football field, too.
He is survived by his beloved mother, Mary Whitley, and his sister, Lisa M. Whitley, of Cataula, Georgia, his son Richard “Bubba” Whitley and daughter in-law, Marie Whitley, of Cataula, Georgia, his son Thomas E. Whitley of Smiths Station, Alabama, his son, Jason L. Whitley, formerly of Cataula, Georgia, 8 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mr. Whitley’s cremation and services will be at McMullen Funeral Home on Gentian Boulevard in Columbus, Georgia.
