Born on January 2, 1942, in Columbus, Georgia, Steve was a lifelong resident of the city he adored and served with unwavering dedication. A proud graduate of Jordan High School, Steve's youthful exuberance and intelligence were evident early on. After completing his education, he embarked on a career with Bibb Manufacturing, where he worked until his retirement. His commitment to his work was only surpassed by his devotion to his family and community.
Steve's passion for civic engagement led him to serve as a Bibb City Council member for ten years, where he was known for his thoughtful decision-making and his ability to listen to the needs of all citizens. His leadership qualities and love for his community culminated in his service as the last Mayor of Bibb City, a role he held for five years. In this position, Steve's selfless nature shone brightly as he worked tirelessly to improve the lives of his constituents.
Steve was an avid fisherman. He found solace and joy in the simplicity of casting a line into the water, a pastime that allowed him moments of peaceful reflection. His love for fishing was only matched by the time he cherished with his family and dogs. For several years he coached little league sports where he impacted and shaped the lives of many young men.
Those who knew Steve would describe him as loving, selfless, and kind. These words not only capture the essence of the man but also the legacy he leaves behind. His ability to see the good in people, to extend a helping hand without a second thought, and to put the needs of others before his own, are traits that have indelibly marked the lives of those he touched.
In addition to his parents, Verba Franklin and Henry Gray, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of over 47 years Carolyn Gray, daughters Donna Boswell and Stephanie Smith, grandchildren Steven Marshall, Renee Eldridge, and Matthew Brooks.
