SSgt. Rt. John T. Coates, 65, of Columbus, Ga. died Friday, September 27, 2013 at Jack Hughston Hospital in Phenix City, Al.
Memorial Services with Military Honors will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, October 4, 2013 at the Infantry Center Chapel with Chaplain (Cpt.) Austin Vann officiating. A private family Entombment will be held at Ft. Benning Main Post Cemetery according to McMullen Funeral Home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus.
Mr. Coates was born October 14, 1947 son of the late John D. Coates and Elise Galloway DeLeaver. Mr. Coates retired after 17 years as a Staff Sargent in the U.S. Army and was Baptist by faith. He was affiliated with Buffalo Soldiers and the VFW. He was a Quality Insurance Inspector. He was predeceased by his God Daughter KiAnna Dickerson.
Survivors include his wife Peggy Pratt Coates of Columbus, GA, sons; Anthony Coates of Tallassee, AL and John Brandon Coates of Columbus, GA, daughters; Kia Coates Hernandez (Steve) of Trenton, NJ., Talmia Coates and Sabrina West of Chattanooga, TN. sisters; Shelia Thomas (Franis) of Trenton, NJ, Cheryl Hinton (Gary) and Lisa Coates of Baltimore, MD, brother; Byron Coates (Noriko) of Springfield, Va, sister-in-law; June Pratt of Tallahassee, FL, uncle; Frank Galloway, and 6 grandchildren.
