Shirley Ann Vollentine, died, Tuesday, January 7, 2014 in San Diego, CA.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, February 8, 2014 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA 31907 with Pastor Judy Hay officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.
Mrs. Vollentine was born December 3, 1935 in Tazwell, TN. daughter to the late William Henderson Lane and Mertie Hollingsworth. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ltc. (Ret.) John T. Vollentine; her daughter, Vicky Holland; her sisters, Vola Lane Spidle and Janie Lane Wiensch; and her brothers, Jimmy Lane and Henderson Lane.
Survivors include her sons, David (Renee), Steve (Glynis) and Jimmy (Vicky) Vollentine all of Columbus, GA; daughter, Valerie Vollentine Hilton (Ken) of San Diego, CA; granddaughter Kirsten Vollentine of Phoenix, AZ.; four nieces, Harriet Spidle Malone (Jim) of Birmingham, AL, Debbie Spidle Maindonald of Canyon County, CA, Vadora Spidle Saplala of Memphis, TN and Angie Spidle Sanfilippo (Anthony) of Las Vegas, NV; and a nephew, Ed Spidle (Linda) of Phenix City, AL.
Shirley was a homemaker; but, also worked in the family business, Vollentine Rentals. She and her husband, John, were dedicated sponsors of the International Student Training Division (ISDT). They sponsored Allied Officers attending the ISTD at Ft. Benning, GA for over 40 years. Along with her husband, they hosted and entertained many Foreign Officers and their families and became very well known for their gracious Southern Hospitality. Shirley was an amazingly gifted cook, studying under several professional chefs and by her own self-study. She then gained even more cultural culinary knowledge from the time spent with the foreign officer's families and from her own international travels.
