Shirley May Armstrong, a treasured mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully due to an illness on October 30, 2023, in Venice, Florida. Born on February 10, 1939, in McLean, Illinois, Shirley lived a life full of love, generosity, and selflessness.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, November 11, 2023 at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.

Shirley was a devoted mother to her children, Debra Henderson, Mark Armstrong and Marty Armstrong, and a loving mother-in-law to Brenda Armstrong. She adored her grandchildren Jasmine, Devin, Madison, Dawn, Destiny (Brian), February, Paisly, Aramis, Marki, and Rowan. Shirley was also blessed with great-grandchildren Atlas, Halen, Isla, and Liam, who brought immense joy and pride to her life. In addition to her immediate family, Shirley is survived by her brother, Joseph Thrasher, and his wife, Alida Thrasher.

Shirley's life was one of dedication and hard work. After completing high school, she pursued further education and embarked on a career that saw her take on roles as a cafeteria employee, cook, and eventually a manager at Retail Aafes. Despite her busy professional life, she always found time for her family, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to their happiness and well-being.

Beyond her work and family, Shirley was known for her love of gardening and landscaping. Her home was a testament to her green thumb, filled with vibrant flowers and lush plants she had nurtured with care. In her spare time, Shirley enjoyed engaging in puzzles, playing bingo and SCRABBLE, and was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves. Her interests and hobbies brought her great joy and provided countless hours of entertainment for her family and friends.

Shirley will be remembered for her loving nature, her generosity, and her selfless devotion to those she cared about. Her warm personality and kind heart left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She was a beacon of strength and resilience, facing life's challenges with grace and dignity.

As Albert Einstein once said, "Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile." Shirley embodied this sentiment, dedicating her life to the service of others. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of her family and all those who were fortunate enough to know her.
