Sherman J. "Joe" Dansro, Sr., 82, of Columbus, GA died Saturday, December 4, 2010 at Martin Army Community Hospital.
Rosary services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, December 10, 2010 followed by the Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church 1973 Torch Hill Rd. Columbus, GA 31903. Burial will take place at Ft. Benning Main Post Cemetery in Ft. Benning, GA according to McMullen Funeral Home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Mr. Dansro was born January 9, 1928 in Rutland, VT son of the late William J. and Almira Ayers Dansro. He was a resident of Columbus, GA since 1959. His military service spanned 24 years including both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army retiring from the Army as a Master Sergeant in 1975 and from Civil Service where he was the Chief of Audio Selection in 1990. He was a Veteran of WWII, Korea, and two tours of Vietnam.
He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church where he served as President of the Parish Council as well as Lay Reader and Eucharistic Minister. He was also a volunteer with CONTACT where he served over 5000+ hours on the phone lines as well as being a Member of Contact's Board of Directors, the Audubon Society where he served on the Board of Directors, the Red Cross where he donated Platelets and Plasma, the Police and Sheriffs Department where he was a graduate of the 1st Citizens Law Enforcement Academy. He made over 600,000 rosary's for women of the PCCW of Our Lady of Lourdes that were sent all over the world. In June of 1996, he was selected as a hero of the community and carried the Olympic Torch in Columbus, GA.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, William J., Jr., Robert, sister, Mildred Longerga, and great grandchildren, Kameron Troy Witticar and Angela Franklin.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Helen J. Regula Dansro, three sons, Sherman Jr. of Atlanta, GA, Peter Dansro of Milford, KS, Roy Dansro of Cincinnati OH, 3 daughters, Sharmane Williford of Columbus, GA, Michelle Farley of Phenix City, AL and Julie Slagstad of Ocala, FL, sister, Florence Berdgen of Ft. Pierce, FL, eight granddaughters, five grandsons, and 27 great grandchildren.
