SFC (Ret.) John R. Sikes, 78, of Columbus, GA died Friday, October 7, 2011 at his home.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Wayne Hallaway and Chaplain Greg Allen officiating. A private interment with full military honors will be held at Ft. Benning Main Post Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
SFC (Ret.) Sikes was born May 28, 1933 in Waynesboro, GA son of the late John E. and Minnie Lee Ellison Sikes. He was a retired U.S. Army Veteran having served in the Vietnam War. He later worked as a service manager in domestic heating for Civil Service at Ft. Benning, GA. He was a life-long member of First Church of God. He loved to go fishing and spend time with his family.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Oris Coleman Sikes of Columbus, GA; son, John Roger Sikes of Columbus, GA; daughter, Katie S. Herrmann (Christopher) of Fortson, GA; brother, Glen Sikes of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, John Roger Sikes, II, Logan C. Herrmann and Nolan C. Herrmann; great grandchildren, Dylan Sikes and Serria Sikes and several nieces and nephews.
