Ruth Brooks Mitchell

Ruth Brooks Mitchell, 93, originally from Grant, AL passed away on January 13, 2024 in Columbus, GA.

A memorial service will be held at a later date according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.

Ruth was born on November 23, 1930, the youngest of thirteen children of the late John Richardson Brooks and Anna Rice Brooks of New Hope, AL. She and Clarence B. ”Bud” Mitchell of New Hope were married in August of 1948, and raised their three children on their farm at Grant. Ruth was a friend to all, with a ready smile, a warm hug and a helping hand. She was a well-known and talented seamstress, and her skills were in constant demand.

Ruth is survived by her son, Kenneth Mitchell of Grant, AL and her daughter, Pennie (Mark Sr.) Cushing of Columbus, GA, grandchildren, Allison (Carmin) Sellers of Tacoma, WA and Bethany (Larry) Parker of Baker City, OR; Jennifer Champlain of Columbus, GA, Robert (Angela) Sellers of Columbus, GA, and Tony (Melody) Sellers of St. Charles, IL; and Sheree Cushing and Gail Cushing, both of Columbus, GA. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, LillianBotos of Madison, AL and Betty Brooks of Bernice LA.

She has been reunited in eternity with her loving husband of 63 years, Bud Mitchell, her son Roger Mitchell, her grandson, Mark Cushing, Jr. and all her siblings: Dorothy Westbrook, Naomi Goolsby, Leonard Brooks, Edwin Brooks, Oneal Brooks, Ludie Mance, Lucile Jackson, Paul Brooks, Bervene Brooks, James Brooks, W.T. Brooks and Roy Lee Brooks.

Ruth was cremated as she wished to be, and her ashes will be interred beside her husband and son in New Hope Cemetery. Details for the graveside service will be announced later.  In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial gifts to Henryville Methodist Church in Guntersville, AL, or Shepherd’s Cove Hospice in Albertville, AL.
