Ruth Ann Broach McConnell, 91, of Columbus, GA died Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at St. Francis Hospital.
Born on June 10, 1924 in Richland, GA, Ruth Ann Broach was the daughter of the late Wilkerson Ward Broach, Sr. and Lois Frances (Peek) Broach. She was a granddaughter of the late Dr. William Woodson Peek and Frances Margaret (Johnston) Peek, and also a granddaughter of the late Walter Jones Broach and Lucinda Ann (Ward) Broach.
A graduate of Richland High School, Ruth Ann was Valedictorian of the class of 1941 and was a member of the National Beta Club.
While living in Richland, she attended the Richland United Methodist Church and enjoyed cooking, sewing, reading, and playing the piano.
After high school Ruth Ann attended GSCW, Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, GA and later completed business classes in Pensacola, FL Trades School.
During WWII, Ruth Ann worked on the Rationing Board in Lumpkin, GA and died clerical work in the Commissary Office in Ft. Benning, GA.
On July 4, 1946 Ruth Ann married Robert C. McConnell, her beloved husband of 44 years who died in Columbus, GA in 1990. He was born in Armadale, Scotland and later became a U.S. Citizen, and a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII.
Ruth Ann and Robert moved to Detroit, MI and reared two children before returning in 1976 to live in Columbus, GA.
While in Detroit, Ruth Ann had worked at the National Bank of Detroit, in the Vault, dealing with securities, stocks, and bonds. And, later she worked at the bank as an administrative assistant in the Real Estate Department. After returning to Columbus, Ruth Ann worked at the W.C. Bradley Company.
Preceding Ruth Ann in death besides her loving parents and devoted husband was an elder brother, Walter Clinton Broach, and a younger brother, Wilkerson (Wilkes) Ward Broach, Jr.
Surviving family members are daughter, Barbara Lois McConnell and son, Keith Robert McConnell, Sr. and his wife, Sharon Kay (Troutman) McConnell. Ruth Ann has three grandchildren, Lesley Ann, Bobby, and Krissy McConnell, as well as many other relatives and friends.
Ruth Ann shall be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her. She was an honorable, respectful daughter, a devoted, loving wife, a caring and compassionate mother and grandmother, and a thoughtful, trustworthy, generous person willing to help wherever needed.
A private graveside service attended by immediate family members was held for Ruth Ann on Monday, October 5, 2015 at 2:00 PM in Harmony Cemetery in Richland, GA with Pastor Judy Hay officiating according to McMullen Funeral Home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
