Ruth Catherine Haralson, affectionately known as Ruth by her loved ones, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2024, in Bay Minette, Alabama.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM, Friday, July 19, 2024 in the chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. A private interment will be held at Parkhill Cemetery.
Ruth was born on March 27, 1931, in Louisville, Kentucky, Ruth's journey through life was marked by her unwavering spirit and the love she shared with those around her. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Walter E. Haralson Sr., and leaves behind a legacy of love and commitment as seen through her family.
Ruth's life was one of service and creativity. After receiving her GED, she joined the Women's Army Corp in 1952, where she served her country with honor until 1954. During her military service, Ruth was awarded several medals, including the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), the Good Conduct Medal, and the National Defense Medal. Her years in the Army were a source of great pride and instilled in her a sense of discipline and excellence that she carried throughout her life.
After her service, Ruth became widely known for her exceptional talents as a Bakery Manager and Lead Cake Designer at Piggly Wiggly on S Lumpkin Rd in Columbus, Georgia. Her cake designs won numerous accolades and brought joy to many. Her skill was so renowned that she was featured in the Columbus newspaper for a birthday cake she crafted for actor Lorne Greene during his time filming at Fort Benning. Ruth's artistic touch and attention to detail in her cake decorating were a testament to her passion for her craft.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Ruth was a woman of many interests. She had a love for painting, which allowed her to express her inner vision on canvas, capturing the beauty of the world as she saw it. Dancing was another joy in her life, and she could often be found moving gracefully to the music she loved. These hobbies provided Ruth with immense pleasure and were a source of relaxation and happiness.
Ruth's home was always filled with warmth and generosity. She was a loving and faith-filled woman who led by example. Her children, Walter E. Haralson Jr., John W. Haralson, James D. Haralson, and Glenn T. Haralson, along with their wives Susan, Sandy, Caryn, and Karen, respectively, were the center of her world. Her twelve grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren were the recipients of her boundless love and the stories and lessons she cherished sharing.
Those who knew Ruth would describe her as loving, faith-filled, and generous. Her presence was a comfort, and her guidance was sought by many. She lived her life with an open heart, always ready to give of herself to others. As Mother Teresa once said, "Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love." Ruth embodied this sentiment through her everyday actions and the small yet significant ways she impacted those around her.
Ruth's passing is a moment of sorrow for her family and friends, but also a time to honor and celebrate a life well-lived. Her memory will be cherished, and her spirit will continue to inspire.
