Ruby Abernathy, 88, of Smiths, AL died Friday, April 15, 2011 at her residence.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, April 18, 2011 at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel, 613 14th Street, Phenix City, AL with Reverend Charles Hayes officiating. Grandsons and great grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Interment will follow at 2:00 P.M. EST at Rosemier Cemetery in Opelika, AL. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4:00 - 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Abernathy was born November 2, 1922 in Fairfax, AL daughter of the late Lewis Carl Cottingham and Ida Mae Bridges Cottingham. She retired as a spinner at the Opelikaoqnow Cotton Mill and was a member of Edgewood Assembly of God Church in Columbus, GA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Abernathy, her sons, Harold Russell Abernathy and Larry Abernathy; her sister, Martha Colman and her brothers, Leroy Cottingham, Marcus Cottingham and Ralph Cottingham.
Survivors include her daughter, Joyce Spurlin of Smiths, AL; sons, Jim Abernathy (Delores) of Orlando, FL, Bruce Abernathy (Esther) of Sycamore, AL, Randy Abernathy (Tracy) of Keller, TX, Mark Abernathy (Donna) of Columbus, GA, and Rusty Abernathy of Columbus, GA; daughter-in-law, Barbara Abernathy of West Palm, FL; sisters, Connie VanHossen of Oceola, NE, Gaynell Graham of Smiths, AL, and Joyce DePlanche (Ted) of Prattville, AL; twelve grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
