Retired Sheriff J. E. (Gene) Hodge, Sr. 85, of Columbus died Friday, September 28, 2018 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, 2:00 PM at Northside Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Speer officiating. Interment with Sheriff's Honors will be held in Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 6:00 PM at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus.

Sherriff Hodge was born July 20, 1933 in Columbus, Georgia son of the late John Jarrett and Virginia Kyle Allen Hodge


Sherriff Hodge began his career with the Muscogee County Sheriff's Department on January 1, 1961; he was promoted to Chief Deputy Sheriff on August 1, 1972; and he was appointed Sheriff in April, 1980, and was re-elected for four consecutive terms by the voters of Muscogee County.

Sherriff Hodge's experience and training have resulted in his
being appointed to various positions of leadership within
the law enforcement field, including the office of Internal Affairs with the Georgia Department of Corrections, past President of the Georgia Sherriff's Association, serving on the State Organized Crime Prevention Council and the Georgia Board of Corrections where he served as a member of the Crime and
Punishment Committee, which studied prison overcrowding and
made recommendations regarding state parole policies; past president of the Georgia Sheriff's Youth Homes, former executive board member of
the Georgia Correctional Association, and served on the National Sheriffs' Association's Crime Prevention and Youth Committee.

In addition to his law enforcement career, Sherriff Hodge was a member of the Columbus Exchange Club, former board member of the Columbus Regional Chartered Council on Child Abuse Inc., and a member of the Northside Baptist Church.

Other than his parents, Sherriff Hodge was preceded in death by his wife Sandra Harris Hodge and sister Judy Green.

Survivors include his two sons, Rett Hodge and Randy Hodge both of Columbus, Ga., sisters, Patricia Evans of Columbus, Ga., Rita Loette Souther of Pine Mountain Ga., Hilda Kathleen Hodge Forest City, NC. Janice Louise Hardy of Adele, Ga., brother, Marshall Allen Hodge of Sedan, KS.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Sherriff Gene Hodge to the Georgia Sheriff's Youth Home 3000 Highway North, P.O. Box 1000 Stockbridge, Georgia 30281.
