LTC Rt. Roger Lee Hewitt, 68, of Columbus, Georgia died Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday, January 06, 2014 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. P. Shane Green officiating. Interment with Military Honors will be held in Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. at McMullen Funeral Home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
LTC Hewitt was born July 17, 1945 in Morgantown, West Virginia son of the late William Ridgeway and Helen Staggers Hewitt. He proudly attended University High School in Morgantown, WV where he met his bride. He married Cheryl Jones on August 20, 1966 in Morgantown, WV. He graduated from West Virginia University in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education and was commissioned a second lieutenant upon graduation from WVU and the ROTC program. In 1975, Roger Hewitt received his Masters in Education from the University of Missouri.
He was a dedicated soldier for over 22 years. LTC Hewitt began his distinguished career as a soldier in the U.S. Army where he honorably served two tours in Vietnam and a prestigious tour in Berlin, Germany during the Cold War. In 1990, he honorably retired from service at Ft. Benning, Georgia.
During his long and distinguished career as an Infantry solider, LTC Hewitt earned the following decorations; Bronze Star Medal with 1 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster and "V" Device, Meritorious Service Medal with 2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 1 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster and "V" Device, Army Achievement Medal with 1 Bronze Oak Leaf, Army of Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Silver Service Star and 1 Bronze Star, Army Service Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Ranger Tab, 4 Overseas Service Medals, First Class, Legion of Merit, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation Badge with Palm.
Following his career in the Army, Roger co-founded Omega Training Group in 1990 where he built teams and services dedicated to bettering soldiers. In 2003, Roger was awarded the Order of the Saint Maurice from the National Infantry Association. He was a successful mentor and leader for over 900 employees when the company was sold in 2008.
While very successful in both of his careers, his truest successes came from his personal life. He was a devoted husband, compassionate father, proud grandfather, avid golfer, staunch Mountaineer fan, and a cherished friend to many who will continue to preserve his legacy as a proud Christian American. Mr. Hewitt was also a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Maple Ridge Golf Community, and Green Island Country Club.
His parents William and Helen and his sister Norma Jean precede Mr. Hewitt in death.
Mr. Hewitt is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Cheryl Jones Hewitt; his two adoring daughters, Jennifer Shaw (Tim) and Robin Gosling (Paul); four grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Zachary, Henry and Anna all of Columbus, GA. He is also survived by his brother John Robert (Mary) of Morgantown and countless of loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
