Robert "Bob" Upchurch Jr., a cherished family man, respected businessman, and lifelong resident of Georgia, passed away peacefully from natural causes on January 2, 2025, in Midland, GA, at the age of 82. Born on December 29, 1942, in Columbus, GA, to the late Robert and Hazel Upchurch, Robert, affectionately known to all as Bob, left an indelible mark on the hearts of those he encountered.
Visitation for friends and family will be held at McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd, Columbus, GA 31907, on Saturday, January 11, 2025 from 2:00pm-4:00pm
Bob's early years were spent in the halls of Columbus High School, where he excelled both academically and socially. His passion for history and learning propelled him to the University of Georgia, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree. Robert's love for history never waned, leading him to impart knowledge to young minds as a history teacher at Columbus Junior High School. His teaching career, though impactful, was but the first chapter of his professional life.
Following his teaching tenure, Bob's charismatic personality and keen business acumen found a new outlet in sales. He joined Southern Bell, known later as Bell South, as a traveling salesman, forging lasting relationships and earning respect in the industry. However, it was his entrepreneurial spirit that truly defined his career. Transitioning from sales, Bob embarked on a new venture in the jewelry industry, working for a wholesale jeweler before establishing his own successful business, the Gold and Silver Trading Company. For over 40 years, Bob was the proud owner and operator, building a legacy of integrity and dedication.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Bob was an avid outdoorsman with a profound love for nature. He cherished the tranquility of hunting and the patience of fishing, often sharing stories of his adventures. His enthusiasm extended to sports, particularly his unwavering support for Bulldog football, which sparked many lively conversations and gatherings.
Yet, above all, Bob's world revolved around his family. His loving nature and spirited personality made him the cornerstone of family life The annual beach trips every spring and summer became a treasured tradition, creating memories that his family will hold dear forever. These moments captured the essence of Bob – a man who found joy in the simple pleasure of being with his loved ones.
In addition to his parents, Bob is preceded in death by his younger brother Phillip R. Upchurch.
He is survived by his daughters, Lucile "Lucie" Hice (Jason), and Hadley Marie Scott (Bobby); and his beloved grandson, Robert Stearns Scott.
