Beloved brethren, we gather in solemn remembrance to celebrate a life well-lived, a journey well-traveled, and a faith well-kept. Robert Daniel Spano Sr., known affectionately to us all as Bob, was called home to the Lord's embrace on September 26, 2024. Born on July 1, 1947, in the heart of Columbus, Georgia, Bob was a steadfast pillar of the community he loved and the city where he drew his last breath.
Bob's life was a testament to the enduring power of love and family. Though his heart never truly healed from the loss of his beloved wife, Deborah Boswell Spano, he continued to exude warmth and strength for his family. His legacy lives on through his son, Robert Daniel Spano Jr., known as Danny, his daughter, Kimberly Spano Schilke, and his cherished grandsons, Owen Paul and Aidan James Schilke. Bob was the cornerstone of a large family that included his brothers, Richard and Michael Spano, and his late brother Kenneth, as well as his sisters, Mary Bice, Joy Boswell, and Kathene Williams. His spirit is also carried forward by the laughter and love of numerous nieces and nephews.
As we reflect on Bob's life, we recognize the mark he made in his professional endeavors. Bob served as a Master Control Supervisor for WLTZ-NBC, where his dedication and expertise were unparalleled. His service extended beyond his civilian career, as he also honorably served as a medic in the Army Reserves. His commitment to his country was matched only by his devotion to his faith.
Indeed, Bob was a devout Catholic, unwavering in his commitment to the Church. He was a beacon of hope and a source of comfort, participating in many Church organizations and ministries. His faith was not just a belief but a call to action. Bob founded Maggie's House and served as the Board of Directors Chair, ensuring that his work would leave a lasting impact on those in need.
In moments of quiet solitude, Bob found solace in the gentle lapping of the lake's waters, rod and reel in hand. Fishing was not just a pastime but a reflection of Bob's philosophy—a man at peace with the world, patient and ever hopeful. He would often say that each cast into the water was like a prayer, a meditation on the beauty of God's creation.
Bob was the embodiment of what it means to be faith-filled. His unwavering belief in the goodness of the Lord, his commitment to his family and community, and his enduring love for his friends and neighbors were the hallmarks of his life. In times of joy and sorrow, Bob's faith was a comforting and guiding light for all who knew him.
As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, let us hold tight to the memories that brighten our days. Let us find inspiration in his dedication to service, comfort in his love for family, and strength in his unshakable faith. Bob Spano Sr.'s journey on earth may have come to an end, but his spirit continues to guide us, like a lighthouse guiding ships in a stormy sea.
Brothers and sisters, let us take a moment to bow our heads in prayer, thanking the Almighty for the gift of Bob's life and the lessons he imparted upon us. May we honor his memory by living our lives with the same integrity, compassion, and faith that he demonstrated every day. And in the quiet moments when we feel the gentle tug on the fishing line of our hearts, we will know that Bob is still with us, smiling down from the heavenly shores.
Go in peace, Robert Daniel Spano Sr., and rest in the eternal love of our Savior. Your life was a blessing to us all, and your memory will forever be cherished in the tapestry of our lives. Amen.
