Robert Tom Lands, 89, of Columbus, GA died Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at Columbus Hospice House.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 19, 2013 at Wynnbrook Baptist Church, 500 River Knoll Way, Columbus, GA 31904 with Dr. Geoff Hammond and Dr. Kevin Calhoun officiating. Entombment will follow in Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral at the church according to McMullen Funeral Home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.

Robert Tom Lands was born January 3, 1924 in Newnan, GA, the son of the late Truman and Erva Lee Lands. He was a World War II and Korean War veteran earning the Combat Infantryman Badge and other medals.

He married Mattie Belle Jones in 1944 and raised two sons Donald and Ronald. He was a deacon at Wynnton Baptist Church and worked with the youth department there for many years. After 27 years in the Army, he retired as a Master Sgt and went back to work with civil service in the Infantry School at Fort Benning as a Range and Terrain Specialist.

In 1971 his wife contracted cancer and died at home after many months in Walter Reed Hospital. In 1973 he met and married Frances Fran Lands who was a management analyst and they worked together in the Infantry School, he in the Director of Operations and she in the Resources Management Office until they retired in 1986.

Tom was an avid fisherman and played senior league ball for years. Their team won Georgia State Championship one year. After retiring he spent many hours in his yard with his flower gardens. His neighbor once said that when he directed friends to his house, he told them to find the most beautiful yard in the neighborhood and his house was next door.

After retirement, Tom and Fran were able to travel throughout the country visiting every state enjoying the beauty of America. They served the Lord together for many years at St Mark United Methodist Church in many ministries including several summers with the ministry team to Methodist Rural Life Center in Hayesville, NC, delivering meals to shut-ins, staffing a food bank, Brown Bag, working with senior citizens, and was active with the Walk to Emmaus Community. He later became a member of Wynnbrook Baptist Church and served in the Greeter and Ushers Ministries, the Kitchen ministry and the LIGHT Sunday School Class.

Mr. Lands was preceded in death by his first wife, Mattie B Lands, two brothers, William and Fred and a sister, Sara Robinson.

Tom and Fran were blessed with 13 wonderful grandchildren and 7 great grand children and were so proud of all their accomplishments.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Lands, sons, Donald Lands (Janice) Ooltawah, TN; Ronald Lands (Bobbie) Decatur, GA; Clayton Jaindl (Pam) Columbus,GA, Dr. Michael Jaindl (Joan) Naples, FL; Sisters, Ann Bellew (Turner) Puyallup, WA, and Doris Mancuso (Frank) New York, Grandchildren, Windle Lands, Decatur, GA; Matt Sanfilippo (Emily), Olive Branch, MS; Lisa Ritter (Ben) Smiths Station, AL; Chad Jaindl (Alicia) Columbus, GA; Michael Jaindl (Catya) Ft. Myers, FL; Daniel Jaindl Naples, FL; Jean Holthouse (Daniel) Annapolis, MD; Robert Jaindl, Joseph Jaindl, Mary Frances Jaindl, Andrew Jaindl, Kenneth Jaindl, Elizabeth Jaindl Naples, FL; Great Granddaughters, Haley and Morgan Ritter; Mayson, Ali, Riley, and Harper Jaindl; Nora Sanfilippo, and Special Brothers in Christ, Robert Griffin, James Land, Aubrey Walker, Del Myers, Tom Wooley, Harry Ikner, Will Bruner, Jerry Braxton, Ken Slemons, and Jim Smith.

Memorials may be made to the Lottie Moon Mission Fund at Wynnbrook Baptist Church in Columbus, GA.
