Robert "Barry" Ellis, Jr., 73, of Columbus, GA died Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at Columbus Hospice House.
Memorial services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, December 19, 2015 at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel with Reverend Gary Tankersley and Reverend Jimmy Culpepper officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Barry was born June 2, 1942 in Columbus, GA son of the late Robert Ellis, Sr. and Johnnie "Faye" Hargett Ellis. He is the eldest of 7 children. He served with distinction as a Machinist Mate First Class on the USS Lewis and Clark. During his tenure in the Navy, Barry was asked to teach Nuclear Power at the Knowles Atomic Laboratory in Barleston Spa, N.Y. Nuclear Power remained a lifelong passion of his. Also, he never forgot his Navy brothers. He remained close to them all throughout his life. Barry was proud to have served his country with honor.
Barry is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Margaret Mines Ellis of Columbus, GA, his children, Jessica King (Rex), Janice Booth (Tim), Jennifer Wade (Tommy), Keith Womack and Kristy Womack. His grandchildren, Jacob Booth, Conner Booth, Andrew Booth, Lance Wade, Kendall King, Devon Womack, and Preston Womack. His siblings are Gordon Ellis (Tina), Dale Ellis (Barbara) Roslyn Mc Math (Bill), Jane Williams (Henry), Susan Williams and Robin Ellis.
