Robert Durley Dean, M.D., of Columbus, GA, died Friday, November 7, 2014 at his residence.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, November 15, 2014 at McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907 with Rev. Scott Hagan officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5:00-7:00 PM at the funeral home.
Dr. Dean was born October 8, 1924 at Horn Lake, Mississippi in DeSoto County. His parents were the late Mary Latimer Dean and Ernest Ray Dean.
He was the valedictorian of his high school in 1942 and received a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Mississippi in 1946. After attending the University of Mississippi School of Medicine for two years, he then attended Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where he received his medical degree in 1951. His senior year he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and AOA honorary medical fraternity. He interned at Charity Hospital in New Orleans followed by general practice in South Mississippi. In 1953 he met and married Walterine Irby, also a native Mississippian. He then served two years as a Medical Officer in the Air Force before returning to Mississippi to begin an OB GYN residency. He became Board Certified in OB-GYN in 1963. He practiced ten years in LaGrange, GA before moving to Columbus for fifteen years in practice. After retiring from his practice, he did locum tenens practice for an additional 10 years. He and his wife enjoyed traveling together while doing this work. He was a past member of the AMA, Georgia Medical Society, Georgia OB GYN Society, and Muscogee County Medical Society.
After completely retiring in 1995 he began as a substitute teacher and volunteer at New Mountain Hill Elementary in Harris County. He helped coach the school's academic team for several years. In 2004, his team won first place in all three preliminary meets and then won the first place championship in the play offs. He also loved flowers and propagating flowers. His yard was filled with Azaleas and Camellias.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Walterine Irby Dean, after 57 years of marriage.
Dr. Dean is survived by four sons, Reagan W. Dean (Cindy) of Marietta, GA, Jeffrey A. Dean, M.D. (Jane) of Greenwood, S.C., R. Jonathan Dean, M.D. (Jill) of Macon, GA, and Charles W. Dean of Duluth, GA. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Kelly and Joel Dean of Marietta, GA, Jad, Dr. Joy, and Julie Dean of Greenwood, S.C., and Mary Frances, Julianna, and Jonathan Dean of Macon, Ga.
Flowers will be accepted but those so desiring may make memorial contributions to the General Fund at New Mountain Hill Elementary School, 33 Mountain Hill Road Fortson, GA 31808.
The family expresses its sincere thanks to Debra Smith who provided loving care for both Dr. and Mrs. Dean in their last years.
