Robert A. Bennett, 88, of Midland, GA, died in his home on Friday, September 15, 2017.
A Memorial Service will be held 4:00 PM, Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Bennett was born on May 22, 1929 in Detroit, MI to Angus R. Bennett and Cecile Chirpka Bennett. He graduated from Michigan State with a bachelor's degree and around that time, fell in love with Helen Joan Brooks, who became the love of his life for the next 59 years until she died in 2010. They started their family in Livonia, MI and then moved to Lakewood, OH in 1957 where they happily raised their children for the next 10 years. Bob often referred to those years as some of the best in his life.
In 1967, he moved his family to Columbus, GA where he accepted a position at Centennial Industries as general manager. After 17 years, he began his second career as an Investment Advisor for JC Bradford, where he worked until his retirement in 1996. He and his wife Helen then traveled extensively frequenting 25 Elder Hostels in the US and overseas. They also enjoyed playing bridge weekly with their friends. But one of their favorite things to do each day was to simply share time talking over a cup of coffee- and perhaps a doughnut! He was known for his sweet tooth.
Bob was active in Kiwanis where he was Treasurer and Club President. He also served several years as the President of the Beaver Run Homeowners Association. He enjoyed playing tennis, bridge, and reading. He read so many books, he kept a notebook to keep track and avoid picking up the same book again. He took great joy in sharing his love of reading with the students of Downtown Elementary Magnet Academy, which he did for almost 20 years as part of Partners in Education.
Bob loved life, loved his wife and family with unswerving devotion and took every opportunity to laugh and share his wonderful smile.
Survivors include his beloved sister, Lynn Wilson; 3 daughters, Barbara Ann Williams (Kerry), Amy Louise Stitt (Randy), Judy Lynn Phillips; 2 sons, Paul Robert Bennett (Teresa) and Bruce Michael Bennett; grandchildren, David Thomas, Kelsey Stitt McKeaige, Janel Stitt MacDonald, Matt and Zack Phillips, and Brooks and Landon Bennett and Shaun Bussey; 6 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would also like to acknowledge the loving caregiving and companionship Bob had from Joyce Osafo, Sarah Thompson, Candice Williams and Stacey Kersey.
