Rita C. Stanaland

Rita C. Stanaland, 55, died unexpectedly from medical conditions on Friday October 12, 2018 in Columbus, Georgia. Rita was the daughter of the late Robert H. Stanaland and Frances L. Stanaland and spent her childhood growing up with her siblings in Savannah, Georgia. Rita graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia with a bachelor's degree in nursing. Rita had not only a nurse's caring spirit, but also a giving heart and would give someone less fortunate not only her time and nonjudgmental compassion but many times her own treasured belongings. That combination is a rarity, and is something that made Rita uniquely special to the people whose lives she touched.
Rita began her career at Candler Hospital in Savannah, Georgia where she worked in the oncology department and later she branched out and spent many years as a traveling nurse. Rita lived in Savannah, Georgia, in Ashland, Oregon and in Columbus, Georgia. Rita was baptized and confirmed Catholic as a child but recently joined the RCIA class at Holy Family Catholic Church as a reaffirmation of her Catholic faith in which she grew up. Rita often shared how much she enjoyed the weekly classes and meeting people with similar goals but she especially loved the lessons taught by Father Dan O'Connell and the guidance of Julia Hird. Rita was an active volunteer with the House of Time and Feeding the Valley Food Bank in Columbus and often spoke highly of all the people she met and had the great privilege to work with and who truly enriched her life.
Rita is survived by her sister Donna S. Hix of Columbus, Georgia, her brother William G. Stanaland and his wife, Janeth of Columbus, Georgia, her sister Julia S. Ledford, and her husband, Joe Ledford of Wendell, North Carolina, her nephews and nieces, Garrett H. Hix, Michael F. Ledford, Teresa L. Ledford, Emet J. Klepper, Patricia Chance and Susan K. Wells, and her uncle and aunt Donald and Winkie LeFils of Osteen, Florida. Rita was preceded in death by her siblings, Mary L. Stanaland and Robert H. Stanaland III.
Funeral services for Rita C. Stanaland will be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at 11:00 am at the Holy Family Catholic Church, 320 12th Street, Columbus, Georgia. Rita will be laid to rest with her parents in Savannah, Georgia.
