Rita Jane Sewell Martin

Rita Jane Sewell Martin, 80, of Cataula,died on Thursday, August 13, 2020 at Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital. She was born in Columbus on February 19, 1940, the daughter of Mozelle Wilson Sewell and James Albert Sewell, Sr. Rita was a 1958 Graduate of Jordan High School. She began taking dance lessons as a child and became an assistant teacher for Ninette Rogers Dancing School. On June 28, 1958, Rita married George Kenneth Martin at East Highland Assembly of God in Columbus. Later, she became a lead teacher for Gayle Humphries Dancing School in Columbus and Phenix City. In 1978, she opened Rita Martin Dancing School and taught hundreds of children before she retired in 1999. "Miss Rita" was loved by all her students and their families. Not only did she teach them to dance, she taught them life lessons, poise, confidence, and more. She was a friend and confidant to everyone and left her impact on all who knew her. Her love for children continued throughout her life and into retirement when she became a volunteer transporter for children for DHR. Her hobbies were cooking, traveling, sewing, and spending time with friends. She was a member of The Way Church in Smiths Station and the Southwest Georgia Classic Club. Rita was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her son,George Kenneth (Bo) Martin, Jr., and her siblings,Margaret Sewell Watkins, James Albert Sewell, Jr., and George Robert (Buck) Sewell, Sr. She is survived by her daughter, Robin Kay Martin of Cataula; her grandson, AlbertBenzin Martin (Makayla) of Pine Mountain Valley, her granddaughters, Gina Kay Martin Williams (Tyler) of Hamilton, Candy Temple Savarese (Chris) of Smiths Station; great grandchildren,Kenzley Kate Williams, Ty Ridge Williams, Colten Savarese, Cooper Savarese; several nieces and nephews, and numerous friends and former students. A visitation will take place on Monday, August 17th from 6:00-8:00 pm at McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA 31907.There will be no memorial service.
