Richard Roth Shipley, a beloved husband, devoted father, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully of natural causes on February 17, 2024, in Columbus, GA. He was born on April 21, 1952, in Cheverly, MD, to the late Charles Thomas Shipley and Joan Shirley Shipley.
A graveside service will be held 2:00 PM, Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at Parkhill Cemetery according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
After graduating from high school, Rick proudly served his country in the U.S. Army as a Military Police officer. It was during his stationing in Germany that he met the love of his life, a meeting that would blossom into a lifelong partnership. Following his military service, Rick demonstrated his versatile skills in various professions. He worked as a skilled mechanic, a reliable commercial truck driver, and ultimately retired as a school bus driver, a role in which he showed great care and responsibility for the safety and well-being of countless children.
Rick was a man of many interests. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life, whether it was playing a round of golf, engaging in a lively game of table tennis, or feeling the freedom of the open road while riding his Harley. His hobbies were not just pastimes but extensions of his personality—activities that reflected his love for life and the happiness he found in every moment.
Those who knew Rick would describe him as handy, selfless, and gentle. His hands, ever capable, fixed and built with ease, turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. His selflessness was evident in the way he lived his life, always placing the needs of others before his own. His gentle spirit was a comfort to all, providing a sense of peace and reassurance to those fortunate enough to be in his presence.
Above all, Rick was a family man. He cherished the time spent with his loved ones and created a legacy of love and kindness that will endure through the generations. His unwavering support and unconditional love were the cornerstones of his family, and his absence will be deeply felt by those who loved him.
As we bid farewell to Richard Roth Shipley, we celebrate the life of a man who exemplified the virtues of dedication, compassion, and integrity. In addition to his parents, Rick was preceded in death by his brother Charles “Chuck” Shipley, and James“Jimmy” Shipley.
Rick was survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Johnnie Lipp Shipleyof Columbus, GA, Daughters: Kimberly Shipley Thomas (Justin) of Columbus, GA, Erin Trowell (Joshua) of Columbus, GA,Granddaughter: Eleanor Trowell of Columbus, GA,Brother: Thomas “Tom” Shipley, Sister: Charlotte Miller, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
