Attended Jordan High School where he was MVP in basketball, baseball, football and track.

Richard received a scholarship from Citadel competing as quarterback and acquiring the starting role two games into the season. He then transferred to Mercer and played basketball and baseball. He went on to play fast pitch softball for Villa Nova, Little Joe's in Columbus and Hubbard Slacks in Bremen Ga. His fans nicknamed him "Lightning" for his speed going around the bases.

His career skyrocketed as teams he played on either won state or regional titles in 18 of his 27 seasons. He competed in five world championships. He received the ultimate reward in sports by being inducted into the Georgia Amateur Softball Association in 1989 and later inducted into the Alabama Amateur Softball Association in 2004. He also was inducted in JVHS (Jordan High School) Athlete Hall of Fame in 2011.

He worked as the Warden of the Muscogee County Jail for 20 years with many accomplishments. Major "Richard Miles, Warden is an unsung hero in Columbus, Georgia. Major Miles has done an outstanding job under extremely difficult circumstances." Mayor Frank Martin.

He liked to fish and hunt with his son and grandsons. The inside joke with us, don't ask him what he wanted to eat because it was always raw oysters. Bluewater Grill or Rose Hill Seafood, it never failed.

Richard and his wife Betty always loved being together and you would rarely find one without the other. They loved their family and are survived by their three children Tracey and her husband Clyde Scheel, Russ and his wife Linda Miles and Sharon Miles. They also have three grandchildren, Lyndsee and Chance Miles and Chad Wyrosdick.
