Richard Eugene Kelly, 83, of Columbus, GA died Thursday, October 11, 2012 at The Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Monday, October 15, 2012 at Wynnbrook Baptist Church, 500 River Knoll Way, Columbus, GA 31904 with Dr. Geoff Hammond and Dr. Kevin Calhoun officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the ceremony in the Wynnbrook Conference Center. A private interment will be held at Parkhill Cemetery according to McMullen Funeral Home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.

Mr. Kelly was born January 18, 1929 in Dothan, AL, son of the late Richard Edward and Winnie Knight Kelly. He was educated in public schools in both Dothan, AL and Columbus, GA, graduating from Jordan Vocational High School in 1947, where he played trumpet in the Robert Barr Band. He later graduated from Georgia Southwestern Junior College in 1949 and enlisted in the Air Force in 1950. After his military service he married Betty Doris Ponder in 1959, then continued his education at the University of Georgia, graduating in 1961. He worked for 33 years at Georgia Power, retiring as a Supervisor. Mr. Kelly served as a Deacon, and Sunday School teacher at Waldrop Memorial Baptist before moving to Wynnbrook Baptist Church in 1987, where he served faithfully as a member of the Fisherman Sunday School class until his death. In addition, he was a member of the Columbus Exchange Club of Columbus, GA, and the Masonic Lodge, as well as, an avid dancer and golfer.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Betty Doris Ponder Kelly of Columbus, GA, daughter, Karen Kelly of Columbus, GA, sister Cindy Straus of Columbus, GA, brother, Gary Kelly (Evelyn) of Columbus, GA and several nieces and nephews.

Flowers will be accepted but those so desiring may make memorial donations to Wynnbrook Baptist Church Music Fund, 500 River Knoll Way, Columbus, GA 31904
