Richard Iwao Ito, Sr., 85, of Columbus, GA passed away on Monday, March 21, 2016 at Canterbury Nursing Facility in Phenix City, AL.
Funeral services will be held at a later date according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Mr. Ito was born January 2, 1931 in Kingsburg, CA son of the late Tsuzuki and Araki Matsu Ito. As a child, he was interned with his family in Poston, AZ, Camp #2 during WWII. He was inducted in the United States Army on February 9, 1951 in San Diego, CA and served in the Korean and Viet Nam wars as a combat medic. He retired after serving with pride and honor for 21 years from the United States Army on February 29, 1971 as a Platoon Sergeant.
He was an avid woodworker and gardener and was often sought after for his gardening skills.
Survivors include his son, Richard Ito, Jr., daughter-in-law, Brenda May Ito, grandson, David Ito, and granddaughter, Alexandra Ito of Columbus, GA and extensive nieces and nephews in California, as well as Hawaii.
