Richard Earnest Garver, 58, of Cataula, GA died Friday, July 22, 2011 at his residence.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church with Reverend William Flippin officiating. There will be a private interment at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell, AL. The family will receive friends Monday from 5:00 - 7:00 at the funeral home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA.
Mr. Garver was born May 31, 1953 in Decatur, ILL son of Jack Garver of North Highlands, CA and Joyce Keyl Garver-Messenger of Columbus, GA. Mr. Garver was the owner and operator of Garver Homes. He was a United States Army Veteran, later retiring from the Army Reserves with 20 years of service. He was an Airborne Ranger and in the 11th Special Forces. During his military career, he received numerous awards. He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church where he was Youth Director and on the church Council. Mr. Garver was Scout Master for Troop 2 and on the Executive Board for Habitat for Humanity.
Survivors include his parents, Jack Garver of North Highlands, CA and Joyce Garver-Messenger of Columbus, GA; his wife of 34 years, Donna Young Garver of Cataula, GA; daughter, Lauren A. Garver of Breckenridge, CO; son, Jeffrey R. Garver (Marissa) of Cameron, NC; brothers, Chris Garver of Phenix City, AL, Eric Garver (Susan), Tim Garver (Michele) and Wynn Messenger all of Columbus, GA, and Scott Garver (Shelia) of Harris Co, GA; a very special grandchild, Isabelle M. Garver; numerous nieces and nephews and other family members.
Flowers will be accepted but those so desiring may make contributions to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 4026 Macon Rd., Columbus, GA 31907.
