Rev. Vernon Paul Prather, 80, of Fortson, GA died Monday, December 5, 2016 at his home.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, December 8, 2016 at Kirkland Memorial Baptist Church 6304 Lynridge Ave. Columbus, GA 31909 with Rev. Larry Davis, Rev. Mike Lott, Rev. John Hatcher, and Rev. Stoney Whitaker officiating. Interment will be held at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Rev. Prather was born March 10, 1936 in LaGrange, GA son of the late Justice Ridley Prather and Vesta Calhoun Prather. He was the Senior Pastor at Kirkland Memorial Baptist Church for 35 years. In 1976 Rev. Prather founded Little League Football in Harris County and proudly coached for 20 years. Vernon loved fishing, camping and singing with his family and friends.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Cathy Prather Noles.
Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Martha Liles Prather of Fortson, GA, daughter, Karen Townsend (Scott) of Fortson, GA, son, Paul Prather, Jr. (Leighann) of Columbus, GA, sisters, Sylvia Polin and Ann Prather Wager both of Port Richie, FL, brother, Joel Prather (Joyce) of The Villages, FL, 5 grandchildren, Jeffery Scott Townsend, Jr., Drew Townsend, Justin Townsend, Corie Martinez and David Noles, and 8 great grandchildren.
Flowers will be accepted but those so desiring may make memorial contributions to Kirkland Memorial Baptist Church.
