Ret. Brigadier General Harry D. Walker passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at the age of 83.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, July 16, 2017 at the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907 with Rev. Steve Womack officiating. A private interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
Harry was born in a farm community outside Delhi, Louisiana on November 1, 1933. He attended Central High School, graduating in 1952. That same year he entered Louisiana State University until January 1956 when, due to family illness, he transferred to what is now University of Louisiana Monroe, graduating in 1957. Additionally, he is a graduate of Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, Infantry Basic, Finance Basic and advanced courses, Command and General Staff College, and the Navy War College.
He entered the military as a second Lieutenant from an ROTC scholarship in March 1957 and served continuously for the next 30 years. He had numerous military assignments during this period including but not limited to: Vietnam; Office of Chief of Staff, US Army; Battalion Commander, Germany; Professor, Navy War College; 18th Airborne Corps; Commander Anniston Army Depot; Commander 59th Brigade, Germany; Commander Army Material Command, Germany; Commander USA Security Affairs Command. He retired on September 1, 1987 as a Brigadier General.
Following retirement, he moved to Columbus, Georgia, taking a job with Wetzel International for the first two years. He then opened his own consulting company (Harry Walker & Associates, LLC) which he operated for the next 25 years. Additionally, he organized and managed Harry Walker Realty, LLC and subsequently organized and managed Walker Realty Farms, LLLP.
He and his wife have been long time members of Central Christian Church since coming to Columbus in 1987. During this period of time Harry was instrumental in the building of a new Church on Moon Road and has served as an Elder, Church Moderator, Trustee and a long-term teacher of the Adult Bible Class.
Harry was one of eight children of James S. Walker and Mabel Glasscock Walker, both now deceased. One of the eight children (boy) died shortly after birth. There were two sisters Bertha Patterson and Lovie Barrett, and five brothers, Roy Walker, James Walker, and Bill Walker and Marvin Walker whom have all preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sally of Columbus, GA; their three children: daughter Cheryl Walker of Houston, Texas; son Gregory Walker of Jupiter, FL; daughter Phyllis Walker Lee of Cataula, GA and eight grandchildren: Kyle Walker Bland, Mason Walker, Audrey Walker, Milo Walker, Delaney Lee, Logan Lee, Gage Lee and Grady Lee. His favorite dog, Doc.
