Ret. Columbus Police Dept. SGT Russell Phillip Qualls, 73, of Ellerslie, GA, died Monday, August 11, 2014 at Gentiva Hospice.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday, August 14, 2014 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Frank Macon and Rev. David Helms officiating. A private interment will be held in Parkhill Cemetery. Family members will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will be Columbus Police Department Chief Ricky Boren and former Columbus Police Department Chiefs, Jim Weatherington, Luther Miller and Willie Dozier. Also serving as Honorary Pallbearers are Jeff Coleman, Richard Koffer, Jim Blue, Earl Neal, Randy Clark, and Steve Ginn. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5:00-7:00 PM at the funeral home.
Mr. Qualls was born November 21, 1940 in Phenix City, AL, son of the late Cleo and Sara Frances Carroll Qualls. He was a 1959 graduate of Jordan High School and received a Criminal Justice degree from Columbus State University. He retired after 34 years as a Sergeant in the Patrol Division for the Columbus Police Department. He was a Baptist by faith.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Larry D. Qualls.
Survivors include his wife, Winnie Ruth Carr Qualls of Ellerslie, GA; children, Phillip Qualls, Cynthia Qualls Miller (Richie); step-children, Frank Macon, Faron Macon, and Bobby Macon, seven grandchildren, Tiffany Leppig, Dustin A. Macon, Kyle Macon, Wm. Allen Macon, Carla M. Macon, Joshua Macon and Graceson Qualls Miller, Four Great-Grandchildren, Alexis Leppig, Sierra Leppig, Austin Leppig and Ilna Macon. Brother-in-law, Dwayne Carr of Columbus, Ga., Sister-in-laws, Dorothy Qualls of Ellerslie, Ga. and Jean Carr of Smiths, Al. several nieces and nephews.
