Ret. Maj. Willis L. Powell, 85, of Columbus, GA died Monday, May 16, 2016 at his home.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, May 20, 2016 at the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907 with Rev. Thad Smith officiating. A private interment will be held at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
Ret. Maj. Powell was born August 10, 1930 in Wellston, OK son of the late Gene and Juanita Powell. Retiring as a Major with 24 years of distinguished service. Ret. Maj. Powell served the majority of his career with the United States Army Marksmanship Unit and as a Sniper serving two tours of duty in Vietnam. Known for developing and commanding this 9th Division sniper school in Vietnam. His accomplishments include but are not limited to the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, and Winner of the Wimbledon Trophy at the National Championships at Camp Perry OH. 1960.
Survivors include his loving wife Kathy Powell of Columbus, GA, daughters, Frances Powell Black of Columbus, GA, Lisa Pruitt of Cleveland, GA and Pamela Williams of Conyers, GA, son, Willis Gene Powell of Columbus, GA, 6 sisters in Oklahoma, 6 grandchildren, Elizabeth Banks and Wesley Powell Black, Matt Pruitt, James, Doug and Chris Williams, 3 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and other family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Morningside Family Matters 6065 Morningside Dr. Columbus, GA 31909.
