Ret. Deputy Fire Chief Jack L. Nowell, 75, of Columbus, GA, died Monday, December 1, 2014 at his residence.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM, Friday, December 5, 2014 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907 with Reverend Mark Sasser officiating. Interment will follow in Parkhill Cemetery with Columbus Fire Department Honors and U.S. Military Honors. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5:00-7:00 PM at the funeral home.

Jack Nowell was born November 23, 1939 in Donalsonville, GA, son of the late Jackson J. Nowell and Louina Whittaker Nowell. He served in the United States Army from 1962-1964 and was in the Army Reserves for 34 years. He was a 1958 graduate of Jordan High School and received an associate's degree in Criminal Justice from Columbus College and an associate's degree in Fire Science from CVCC. Mr. Nowell was a member of GA Fire Fighters Association, Rose Hill Lodge, Scottish Rite 32 and East Highland United Methodist Church. He retired after 29 years with the Columbus Fire Department as the Deputy Fire Chief.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, James R. Nowell and David E. Nowell.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Donnie Nowling Nowell of Columbus, GA; daughters, Joy Tankins (Dana, Colonel U.S. Army) of Fairfax Station, VA and Jill Sammons of Columbus, GA; son, Jack "Jay" Nowell, Jr. of Phenix City, AL; sister, Nora Weems (Travis) of Columbus, GA; brother, Donald Nowell (Kim) of Michigan; sisters-in-law, Julie Nowell of Columbus, GA, Esther Sapp of Brunswick, GA, and Susan Thompson of Columbus, GA; grandchildren, Brittany Lyn Jernigan of Atlanta and Bayley Steven Tankins and Sydney Ann Tankins both of Fairfax Station, VA; special cousins, Roy and Kim Whittaker of Columbus, GA; and several nieces and nephews.
