Ret. Dr. Joe Bruce Carr, MD, 77, of Columbus, GA died Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at The Landings of Columbus.
A Memorial Mass will be held 2:00 PM Friday, October 18, 2019 at Holy Family Church 320 12th St. Columbus, GA 31901 with Father Dan O'Connell and Father Frank Patterson officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
Dr. Carr was born July 28, 1942 in Anderson, IN son of the late James Carr and Jean Gage Carr.
As Columbus' first nephrologist, Dr. J. Bruce Carr is credited with bringing dialysis and innovations in critical care to Columbus. During his 38 years of practicing medicine, he exemplified excellence, compassion and leadership in caring for patients as did Dr. Clarence C. Butler. As St Francis' critical care chief from 2004-2013, Dr. Carr demonstrated a keen ability to establish a deep level of trust and rapport with patients and families facing life and death decisions. He helped them make good decisions, and his involvement provided assurance that their loved ones were receiving the best possible care.
Dr. Carr graduated from Indiana University in 1965. He continued on at their school of medicine to obtain his medical degree in 1969. He then completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Dr. Carr returned to Indiana University for a Nephrology Fellowship. He also received his Masters in Business Administration from the University of South Florida in 1994. Dr. Carr served in the U.S. Navy at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital from 1973-1975.
In July 2011, Dr. Carr was recognized by the Dialysis Clinic with the organization's Pioneer Award for bringing dialysis to the area, having helped establish the area's first outpatient dialysis clinic.
Throughout his career at St. Francis, he constantly strived to improve patient care. He championed a project to prevent central line-associated blood stream infection and was recognized by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement for developing two joint algorithms to optimize glycemic control and reduce the risk of hypoglycemia. Dr. Carr invested substantial time in teaching and mentoring fellow physicians and nurses. He has also served on St. Francis' Ethics Committee.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte G. Carr of Columbus, GA, children, Suzanne Jameson (Tommy) of Maddison, MS, Alisa Carr of Austin, TX, Nathan Carr (Michelle) of Phenix City, AL, James Carr of Columbus, GA, Jennifer Harris (Robert) of Brunswick, GA and Andrew Gage Carr of Yuma, AZ, sister, Ann Miller (Jack) of Carmel, IN, and nine grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association 5156 River Rd. M Columbus, GA 31904.
