Raymond Darrell Eckel, 76, a pillar of Columbus, GA community, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 3, 2025 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Graveside services will be held 1:00 PM, Friday, February 28, 2025 at Ft. Moore Main Post Cemetery. A procession from McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd Columbus GA 31907, to the cemetery will be held. A line up for the procession will begin at 11:50 AM and end at 12:20 PM.
Raymond was born February 23, 1948, in Urbana, IL, to the late Raymond Eckel and Ruby Cruz Eckel.
His sense of duty led him to a distinguished 20-year career in the United States Army, with two tours in Vietnam that showcased his bravery and dedication to his country. Following his military service, Raymond continued to serve his community as a member of the Columbus Police Force for another 20 years. His unwavering commitment to protect and serve was evident in every role he undertook, from first responder and firefighter at the Columbus Airport to his work at the Georgia Marshall's Office.
Raymond's passion for education and service intertwined as he earned a bachelor’s degree in special education and a master’s in criminal justice. He became a beloved substitute teacher and went on to teach Criminal Justice at Columbus State University. His natural leadership abilities shone through as a Boy Scout Leader, shaping the lives of young people with the same integrity and honor he lived by.
Beyond his formal roles, an unexpected adventure led him to the silver screen, where he played a speaking role in the 1984 movie "TANK," shot on Ft. Benning. This experience granted him membership in the Screen Actors Guild, adding yet another facet to his diverse life.
As a man of action, Raymond was instrumental in raising $1 million for premature infants, a cause close to his heart. This remarkable achievement was a source of great pride and joy, reflecting his deep-rooted desire to provide for his community in meaningful ways.
His interests reached far and wide, including working at the Food Bank with his wife during their visits to Germany. He also served on the protection detail for Bill Clinton during his campaign tour bus journey through Georgia, showcasing his versatility and his ability to serve in any capacity required.
Raymond's life was one of purpose and impact. Those who knew him will remember his unwavering spirit, his dedication to his family, and his lifelong commitment to the service of others. His departure leaves behind a void in the hearts of many, but his legacy will continue to inspire and guide us.
Raymond Darrell Eckel's life story is one of courage, service, and love. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we celebrate the incredible mark he has left on the world. His memory will be cherished and honored by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Ilona Eckel of Columbus, GA; his son, Robert Clark, also of Columbus; and his daughter, Tanya Eckel of Griffin, GA; siblings, Phyllis Casta, Betty Hinas (Cliff), Glen Eckel, and Steven Merke. Raymond also left behind his son-in-law Alex Moreno who he loved very much, as well as his sister-in-law Mirella Baumgartner (Jurgen) and a special mention to his niece who was tremendous help Denisel Brand (Michael) who were by his side when he most needed them and their son, Raymond's godson, Louis Brand who Ray loved with all of his heart and always brought a smile to his face. His legacy of kindness, strength, and generosity lives on through them and the many beloved nieces and nephews he cherished.
