Phyllis Elaine Smith Denson, 74, of Midland, GA died Sunday, October 16, 2016 at Columbus Hospice House.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at Evangel Temple 5350 Veterans Parkway Columbus, GA 31904 with Rev. Paul Thomas, Rev. Watson McKemie, and Rev. Norman Dunlap officiating. A private interment will be held at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Mrs. Denson was born March 3, 1942 in Ft. Benning, GA daughter of the late Curtis Dean Smith and Hazel Chandler Smith. She was the widow of Oscar Earle (Buddy) Denson who predeceased her in death on January 1, 2014, after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. He was the owner with his son of Denson Construction Company.
Mrs. Denson was a lifelong resident of Columbus and Midland, Georgia. Her father was a Master SGT in the Army and when she was six years old, her family was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone, where she attended Kindergarten. After about a year-long tour there, her father was once again stationed at Ft. Benning. She lived in Columbus and attended local schools and graduated from Baker High School in 1961.
After high school, Mrs. Denson was married to Mr. Denson on August 7, 1961. She worked as a legal secretary for Judge J. Alvan Davis, and Thompson & Redmond Attorneys for about 8 years. She also worked with her husband at his construction business on many occasions. She was a member of Evangel Temple.
Mrs. Denson enjoyed attending Baker luncheons, bowling with the Baker bunch on Wednesdays, and getting together with her many friends and sharing laughs and fellowship. In her leisure time she loved gardening, playing with her faithful pets, Tootsie and Bo, and entertaining in her home. She also loved to bake.
She is survived by her son, Philip Earle Denson, daughter-in-law, Lori Porter Denson, three grandchildren, Chandler Reid Denson, Hallie Lynn Denson, and Philip Earle Denson, Jr., of Midland, GA. She is also survived by her aunt, Ann Chandler Culpepper of Columbus, GA, cousins, Jan Hamilton Redmond (Ed) of Columbus, GA and Gail Hamilton Reddoch (Jim) of Fortson, GA. She has many cousins who live in North Carolina and South Carolina.
A big thank you to her doctors, Dr. Harvey Harris, Dr. Richard Robbins, Dr. William Hayes, and Dr. Andy Roddenberry and to her caregivers, Junita Guthrie and Maxine Jeffers-Wilson , and Nakita Lee. Also, special thank you to Liz Ohl, Diane Doup, and Annell Webb and family members.
