CSM (Ret) Paul Burkett, 90, of Columbus, GA passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at his residence.
Funeral services with full military honors will be held Tuesday, November 29, 2016 with Rev. Thomas Pope officiating. A private interment will be held at a later date at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM on Monday, November 28, 2016 at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus.
CSM (Ret) Burkett was born September 01, 1926 in Miami, FL, son of the late Leo Burkett and Johnnie B. Powell Burkett. He had retired from the U. S. Army after 25 years of dedicated service to our county as an E-9. During his distinguished career he served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam receiving numerous commendations and awards. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal w/OLC, Army Commendation Medal w/2D OLC, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Purple Heart, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation Badge, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Medal w/ Numeral 28, Good Conduct Medal w/5 loops, Army of Occupation Medal w/Germany and Japan Claps, Legion of Merit, United Nations Service Medal and Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII. He was a member of Central Baptist Church in Columbus, the DAV # 756 and Life Member of the 11th Infantry Army Calvary Association.
Other than his parents, CSM (Ret) Burkett was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Louise Burkett, and his sister, Betty Jo Morris.
Survivors include his daughter, Jody Ann McDaniel (Bill) of West Point, GA; a grandson, Phillip David Strickland (Joy) Ontario, Canada; two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Abby Strickland, Ontario, Canada, and bother-in-law, Col. (Ret) Pete Morris, Hendersonville, NC; nieces and nephews also survive.
