SFC Rt. Oliver Street Dendy 85 of Columbus died Monday at Columbus Hospice House.


A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 24, 2010 McMullen Funeral
Home Chapel with Dr. Kevin Calhoun officiating. A private interment will be held in Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the services at the funeral home according to McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, Ga.


Mr. Dendy was born August 13, 1925 in Watertown, TN son of the late Thomas Street Dendy and Lurah Elizabeth Oliver Dendy. Mr. Dendy was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran serving in WWII and retired after 21 years in the U.S. Army where he served in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He received the National Defense Service Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster) and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. After his retirement from the U.S. Army, he worked as an Audio Engineer for 10 years with the U.S. Civil Service. He was a life member of the VFW; past Chaplain of the VFW Post 665 in Columbus, was the former Fire Chief of the Ellerslie, Ga. Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Lions Club.


Mr. Dendy was a Baptist by faith. He was a past deacon, Sunday School teacher, Training Union and Brotherhood Leader and choir member at several Baptist churches in Muscogee and Harris counties. He was currently a member of Wynnbrook Baptist Church.


He was predeceased by Betty Jo Malone Dendy and Pansy Putnall Dendy.


Survivors include his wife, Juliette M. Dendy of Columbus; daughter, Ivie Dendy Bowman of Senoia, GA; son, Larry B. Dendy (Gail) of Winterville, GA; three grandchildren, Christopher Street Dendy (Rozy) of West Chester, OH; Angela D. Clifton of Senoia, GA and Elizabeth N. Clifton of Atlanta, GA; two great grandchildren, Park Street Dendy and Carter Bohyun Dendy of West Chester, OH; six step children, seven step grandchildren, two step great grandchildren and other nieces and nephews.


Mr. Dendy was a proud patriot who served his country with honor and distinction. He was a devoted husband and was cherished by his family, who enjoyed his entertaining stories and dry sense of humor and who were embraced by his love and care. He will be deeply missed and affectionally remembered by his grateful family and many friends.
