Nydia Orta, a devoted family matriarch and talented seamstress, passed away peacefully of natural causes on March 3, 2024, at the age of 103. So loved by family and friends that she was known as simply Granny to many who were close to her. Born on February 2, 1921, in the picturesque town of Villalba, Puerto Rico, Nydia's soft-spoken, peaceful and loving nature touched the lives of all who knew her. The youngest girl of 11 siblings helped nurture her spunkiness.

Nydia's passion for craftsmanship and service led her to pursue a career as a skilled seamstress, known for her meticulous work and creative designs. Nydia's love for her craft extended to her personal life, where she would often be found sewing beautiful garments and quilts for her family, including whimsical outfits for her granddaughters' Barbie dolls. Her creativity knew no bounds, and everything she made is a cherished token of her love and dedication.

As a lifelong fan of the Atlanta Braves, Nydia's enthusiasm for baseball was infectious. She would eagerly await each game, cheering on her favorite team even through the losing years.

Nydia was a lover of puzzles, word search games and gardening. Her garden was a testament to her patience and nurturing spirit, blooming with vibrant flowers and lush plants that reflected the beauty she brought into the world.

Family was the cornerstone of Nydia's life, and she cherished every moment spent with her loved ones. Her presence at family gatherings was always a source of comfort and joy, and her stories, quick wit and laughter filled the room with warmth. During visits from family and friends, she loved sharing family recipes passed down through generations of family matriarchs that reflected her Puerto Rican culture.

Watching Spanish-language television helped her feel closer to her home island and her family. Nydia’s favorites included telenovelas and reality courtroom shows.

As we bid farewell to Nydia, we are reminded of the beauty and resilience that characterized her throughout her life. Her story is one of acts of service and the enduring power of love. She has left behind a tapestry of memories and precious recipes that will continue to inspire and comfort her loved ones for generations to come.

Nydia's final days were spent surrounded by the family she adored. Her legacy and life will be celebrated as a beacon of light guiding all through compassion, generosity and grace. Rest in peace Nydia Orta, your memory will forever be treasured by us all.

In addition to her parents Jose and Sixta Orta, she is preceded in death by her son Julio Orta.

She is survived by her daughter, Ivis Perez-Orta, Son, George Perez, five grandchildren, Geraldine Miller (Scott), Jose Rodriguez, Elizabeth Brownlee (Joshua), Claudia Felt (Mackenzie), Gabriela Perez (Buzz), and seven great grandchildren, Tristan, Abigail, Oliver, Mila Sofia, Aurelio, Rush and Dominic.
