Michael Edward Medlock, 70, of Cataula, GA died at home surrounded by family on 13 January 2021 following a valiant battle against t-cell lymphoma.
Mike was born in Phenix City, Alabama to Elwyn and Louise Medlock and was one of the four Medlock boys in the household. Mike was a younger brother to Kenneth and was followed by Garry and Dennis. In 1971, he married Nancy Sue Hamner. Together, they built their lives together and raised two children - Justin and Erin in Harris County.
Mike grew up in the construction industry. He worked his way up to superintendent with the Murphree and Lisle Company prior to helming his own general contracting business and completing a wide variety of residential, commercial, and industrial projects. He served as president of the Phenix City Homebuilders Association. He eventually closed his business and joined Columbus State University where he worked until his retirement as Assistant VP of Facilities. During his tenure there, he helped to expand the campus’ presence in downtown Columbus. Mike loved his job and took tremendous pride in the projects he built and the teams with whom he worked.
He was dedicated to and adored by his family. He and Nancy built their life together in Cataula. They were at times avid runners (completing countless road races including the Honolulu Marathon), travelers, trail riders, cyclists, partners, parents and grandparents. He was a fan of Alabama football and, perhaps, his passing was made easier by their most recent Championship.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Nancy Medlock of Cataula; his son Dr. Justin Medlock, daughter-in-law Kimberly Shoemake-Medlock, and grandson Declan Medlock of Seattle Washington; his daughter Erin Medlock Turpin, grandson Austin Turpin, granddaughters Claire and Ireland Turpin of Cataula;brother Kenneth Medlock (Rodica) and family of Scottsdale Arizona; brother Garry Medlock (Jotoma) and family of Smiths Alabama; brother Dennis Medlock of Phenix City; sister-in-law Sandra Lightsey of Dunnellon, FL; brother-in-law Mike Hamner of Midland, GA.
